Weddings, Funerals & Baptisms at First UMC
|
Weddings:
The service of Christian marriage is provided for couples who wish
to solemnize their marriage in a service of Christian worship.
Everything about the service is designed to witness that this is a
Christian marriage.
If you would like to be married at First UMC, please contact the
pastor BEFORE you set the wedding date. The United Methodist
Church requires pre-marriage counseling and the pastor has sole
discretion as to the particulars of each wedding.
Please contact the pastor via email or phone @ 308-254-4505 with
any questions.
Funerals:
The pastor should be notified immediately upon the death of a
member or constituent of the congregation. Plans for the service
and all other ministries should be made in consultation with the
family and subject to the approval of the pastor.
If the family requests that there be military, fraternal, or other
rites in addition to the Service of Death and Resurrection, the
pastor should plan carefully the sequence and interrelationship of
these services so the service is not interrupted with other rites,
and so that its integrity is supported and not compromised.
Funerals are not limited to members of First UMC. To arrange for
a meal or refreshments following the service, please contact the
Lay Minister.
Please contact the pastor via email or phone @ 308-254-4505 with
any questions.
Baptisms:
The Baptismal Covenant is God's word to us, proclaiming our
adoption by grace, and our word to God, promising our response
by faith and love. To learn more about how United Methodists
approach the sacrament of Baptism, please read By Water and the
Spirit: A United Methodist Understanding of Baptism.
Baptisms at First UMC may only be scheduled by the pastor and
are always conducted during a time of community worship.
If you have any questions about baptism or are interested in
baptism for either yourself or a child, please contact the pastor via
email or phone, 308-254-4505.
Weddings and funerals conducted in First UMC are services of
Christian Worship, and the same norms, customs, and directives
which apply to regular Sunday services of Christian Worship in
this church apply to these and other "special" (occasional)
services, with appropriate minor modifications as appropriate to
the particular service.
Use and placement of furnishings (particularly for furniture that is
not built in or bolted down), accouterments for worship (service
books, Bibles, Communion ware, candles, etc.), and decorations
(banners, flowers, art, etc.) are at, and under, the direction of the
clergy in charge. Directions ("rubrics"), liturgical/worship texts,
selection of music (including hymns, songs, service and incidental
music) shall be according to the appropriate directory of worship
(or worship/prayer book) of this denomination, as interpreted by
the clergy in charge.
[In normal use, such furnishings as the Communion Table, pulpit,
lectern, presider's chair, font, large musical instruments, etc.,
whenever they are movable, are considered "built in or bolted
down" unless local custom, and set guidelines, of the church
provide for movement or alternate placement in certain limited
circumstances.]
Visiting/assisting clergy and all persons acting in leadership and
supporting roles (liturgists, acolytes, servers, musicians, lectors,
etc.), whether staff/employees/ contractors of this church,
volunteers, church members, or members/employees of "outside"
businesses or organizations (funeral services, musical groups,
caterers, photographers, wedding planners, fraternal
organizations, etc.) shall honor and abide by the policies of this
church and work under the guidance and direction of the clergy in
charge.
No visiting clergy (clergy not on staff of this church) shall be
invited nor permitted to take part in services of this church except
at the personal invitation, and under the direction, of the clergy in
charge. "Clergy in charge" shall mean the pastor of this church.
